Talk Therapies and Cognitive Psychotherapy
Talking is normally a large component psychological therapy, including cognitive therapy, psychodynamic therapy, existential therapy, and humanistic therapy. Some people have initial nervousness about talking about themselves, but this dissipates quickly. Most people enjoy the opportunity to say what has really been on their mind. Through the process of being able to express yourself and receive feedback from your psychologist, you will come to a greater understanding of yourself, and why you feel and act in certain ways. Memory Processing Therapies: Psychodynamic, EMDR, Trauma Focused CBT
There are three main therapies that are used to process memories. Psychodynamic, or psychoanalytic therapy requires two psychotherapy sessions per week and will normally last for more than six months. It suits people who enjoy the process of self-exploration. Memories are processed gradually, rather than quickly. While intensive, it is a very gentle way of working. Over time, how well you get along with your therapist will become an important part of treatment. The changes that people experience tend to be profound and lasting. It is used for both traumatic, and non-traumatic memories. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is used extensively to treat traumatic memories and people with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). During treatment, both sides of the brain are stimulated either through eye movements, tapping the hands, or sounds on either side of the head. It differs from other memory processing therapies because the memories need to be held in your consciousness, but you do not need to talk about them in detail. It is not suitable for everyone, and your therapist can help you to decide whether it is right for you. An alternative to EMDR is Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT). It uses talk-based psychological strategies to process your thoughts about the trauma, and emotion regulation strategies to sooth your nervous system and stabilise your mood. After these initial stages, traumatic memories are addressed and worked through. Do I need to talk about the past? While many people enjoy being able to talk about childhood experiences, some people are apprehensive about this. Talking about memories from the past can help you to see that some of the beliefs that you have formed made sense at the time but have since outlived their usefulness. Knowing this can make it easier for you to let go of these beliefs and replace them with more useful ones. If you find it too difficult to talk about traumas from the past, this can be managed by modifying your psychological treatment in several ways.  The first is by focusing on the effect that the trauma is having on your present life and giving you strategies to minimise these effects. The second is to allow you include the parts of these memories that you do feel comfortable talking about. This process takes longer, but for some people it is the method that they are the most comfortable with. The third method is to use memory processing techniques, such as in EMDR (see above). The important thing to remember is that you always have the power to decide what you want to address in therapy. Your therapist will make suggestions based on what is likely be the most effective but leave the decision up to you.

10 Days Tanzania Family Vacation Holidays

Day 1:
On arrival in Tanzania, the whole family is met by your Tanzania safari guide and transferred you. The drive from the airport to the is about 40 mins. The Ngare sero Lodge set among tropical gardens on a former coffee plantation with Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru as a backdrop. Serengeti wildebeest migration safari‎

Day 2: Arusha National Park
An early morning will immerse us in the African wild we always dreamed about. The topography of this small park is amazingly varied including grassy plains, montane forest, volcanic craters, swamps, and saline lakes. On bright days, we have excellent views of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. We can choose to game drive, to go on a game walk escorted by an armed ranger, or to do a canoe ride on one of the soda lakes. We hope to see giraffe, buffalo and black and white colobus monkeys, as well as some of the shy forest antelope  bushbuck, red duiker and maybe sun.

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park
This morning we drive to Arusha, Tanzania’s safari capital. We may do some shopping or stop for lunch before continuing to Lake Manyara. Much of the northern part of the park is fed by underground water from the Ngorongoro Highlands and, as a result, is covered in dense forest vegetation, giving the appearance of a tropical jungle. This forest is ideal habitat for elephant, bushbuck, blue monkey, and huge troops of an olive baboon. Some parts are dry bushland attracting zebra, impala and giraffe while the lakeshore provides another habitat, perfect for flamingos and other shore birds. Today we will stay at Lake Manyara Serena Lodge.

Days 4 & 5: Cultural Walks and local market Visits
A highlight of our trip to Africa is a chance to meet people from other cultures, broadening our understanding of the human spirit. We spend the day learning about traditional tribal life during a regular visit to a local Masai manyatta; as pastoralists, they know the natural world in a profound way, and we discover how they have lived harmoniously with the land for centuries. We overnight at peaceful Tloma Lodge, located on a working coffee plantation in the green hills of Karatu. Rise early for a hike through the lush highlands of the Oldeani mountains and visit local working farms with sweeping views of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Eyasi. We continue to a local school (if in session) and to meet our peers before proceeding to the crater rim.

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater
We will leave this morning on our way to Ngorongoro Crater for full day game drive (1½ hrs drive from the Tloma Logde). Our trip takes us up to the rim of the Crater, where the views back over Lake Manyara and the floor of the Crater are amazing. We will do a full day game drive before heading to Soap Lodge for Dinner and overnight

Days 7 – 9: Serengeti
The Serengeti is legendary. Here on Tanzania budget camping safari‎ Great Plains, herds of wildebeest traverse the savannah in enormous numbers, while thousands of antelope and gazelle are ever-present. Day 10: Arusha / Home
We fly back to Arusha from the Serengeti, where we’ll have the use of a dayroom at Kia Lodge before connecting to flights home.

First Time: Blue Ridge Parkway

I heard the rumbling engine of Tessa’s sedan heading towards my house. Laying on my bed, I stared at the ceiling contemplating my life choices. I’d spent years studying to become a lawyer, only to fail the Bar Exam twice by a few points. She was coming over to help me figure things out, and I had unlocked the door for her to come right in when she arrived.

Hearing the engine shut off, I waited to hear the slam of the car door. Instead, I heard her lay on the horn like she did whenever someone cut her off in traffic. I waited for her still, then she honked again. Groaning, I trudged to the window to see her parked in the driveway. “Are you coming in?” I asked.

“You’re coming out, Grace,” Tessa called back, poking her head out the window, “We’re going on a Road trip travel.”

“Ugh, I can’t handle that right now,” I whined, “I just want to curl up and die.”

“And that’s exactly why we’re getting you out of the house. Don’t forget to bring a jacket, it’s a little nippy out here.” She smiled at me, her blue eyes filled with hope, and honked again. The neighbors across the street started yelling, and I rolled my brown eyes.

“Okay,” I sighed, “I’m coming.”

I stepped outside into the cool, autumn air and entered her car. She instantly drove off, and I fiddled with the radio dial. “By the end of the day,” Tessa piped up, “You’ll figure out exactly what you’re supposed to do with your life.”

“What if I don’t?”

“Then at least you can say you had an awesome day with your best friend.” She shrugged and giggled.

After several questions, she still wouldn’t tell me where we were going. It was almost noon and my stomach was grumbling. We’d been driving for an hour and I wanted to stop for lunch, but Tessa ignored my suggestions. She shoved a bagged lunch into my chest, and I ate it quickly.

Finally, things started becoming clearer as I focused on the passing street signs. “I think I know where we’re headed,” I grinned.

“Do you?” Tessa asked, eyebrows raised.

“We’re going to the Blue Ridge Parkway, right? We’ve talked about going there for months, but I thought we were waiting for the summer.” My heart pounded and I couldn’t wait for my first experience taking in the gorgeous sights.

“I think you need it now more than ever,” Tessa said, “We shouldn’t wait to cross our adventures off our bucket lists. We need to start taking more chances and saying yes to everything.”

“Everything?”

“Well, most things.”

“Woohoo! We’re going to the Parkway!” I pumped my fists in the air and they smashed against the roof of the car. “Ow,” I said, shaking my hands. “How long until we get there? Are we on it right now? How much longer?”

“Calm down,” she laughed, “Take a nap and I’ll wake you when we’re close.”

“I can’t sleep now! I’m too excited!”

As excited as I was, the turkey sandwich she made me knocked me out cold. Leaning my head on the window, I fell asleep, and moments later I was jolted awake by Tessa swatting me with a map.

“Wake up! Wake up! It’s time to see the sights!”

I shook myself awake and sat upright. On the left of us was a steep mountainside covered in trees with leaves in yellow, red, and orange. Even leaning over Tessa, I couldn’t see the top of the mountain. Rolling down my window, I stuck my head out to feel the rush of wind on my face. My jaw dropped when I saw a valley of rolling hills and a deep gorge running through the middle. I imagined swimming in the cool water of the gorge and listening to the gentle waves that I’d make with my arms ripple and swoosh.

“Look at all those colors and natural beauties,” I gasped. “Doesn’t it look so peaceful?”

“I can picture myself climbing some of those luscious trees and reading a book while lounging on a branch,” Tessa added, “No one could touch me or ask me what I’m doing with my life. It’d just be me lost in an adventure of my imagination.”

“Why would you waste all those sights reading a book?” I asked, “You could make your own adventure just wandering through those grassy fields and climbing the steep rock faces. Everything looks so expertly crafted and untouched by people. It’s like a perfect scene out of a travel magazine.”

“It’s not about scenery for me,” she replied, “It’s the atmosphere. So serene and pure. I bet there’s tons of woodland creatures frolicking around. Do you want me to be like Pocahontas and canoe along the rushing rivers and jump off super high cliffs?”

“Yeah, right,” I chuckled, “You hate camping. You really think you could connect with nature like that?”

“You’re the one that wants me to take in the sights!”

“Take them in, not merge your soul with them.”

We both laughed and continued in silence down the winding road. We passed endless patches of trees, saw a few cows in the distance, clear blue skies, and beautiful rocky cliffs and hills. I wanted to roll down the hill from the Road trip attractions like a kid, screaming at the top of my lungs. I wanted to climb to the peak of the mountain, conquering every rocky step and forested area on the way.

A few cars drove by us in the other direction, taking me out of my daydreams, but other than that I was more relaxed than I could be at a spa. Nature had always intrigued me. I loved the smell of sap and trying to catch a butterfly so I could see the design on its wings. I loved the sound of the leaves crunching as I hiked every trail I could find. If anything, I was the Pocahontas out of the two of us. I was the one who could have a raccoon on my shoulder and a hummingbird buzzing in my ear while I jumped across a ravine.

“Yeah,” I said, looking out at the farmland with fresh eyes. “Nature really is a wondrous thing.”

Saorsa Holiday Cottage and Kenmore

It’s been a week since our stay at Saorsa Holiday Cottage in Kenmore and I think it’s fair to say we are all missing it!

Located a short walk from the banks of Loch Tay and Kenmore, it’s ideal for a Dog Friendly Capital holiday. Surrounded by beautiful walks and not far from dog friendly restaurants, cafes and pubs you are spoiled for choice of the places you can visit with your dog.

Saorsa is a stunning new build close to the picturesque village of Kenmore. It’s beautifully decorated throughout with an open plan living and dining area. It also comfortably sleeps 6 with 3 double bedrooms (one bedroom can be turned into two singles) with the master bedroom having an ensuite. Saorsa has an upside down design with the living areas upstairs. It has the most amazing balcony with stunning views over to Loch Tay and the surrounding hills. The balcony was definitely Baxter’s favourite spot and he loved making the most of the beautiful weather by doing some sunbathing.

Saorsa is also very dog friendly in terms of accommodation. It has a secure garden at the rear of the house which is always a bonus as a dog owner. Inside the house there are extra features such as doggy bowls, a coat peg to hang your dogs lead and a welcome box at the entrance which has a list of dog friendly eateries nearby and things such as towels, poo bags, biscuits and a spare lead in case you have forgotten to pack any essentials for your dog.

Baxter had a great time in the garden too! It was such a benefit to us knowing it was secure and he could run around with his ball and we needn’t worry he could wander off. We all had a great time enjoying the fabulous weather we were blessed with.

Saorsa has a fabulous modern kitchen so if you are wanting to do some cooking while you stay it has everything you could possibly need but we decided to head over to The Courtyard Bar & Brasserie in Kenmore which is about a 10 minute walk away. The Courtyard Bar loves welcoming dogs and has a great doggy station where you can help yourself to a blanket, a bowl of water and biscuits for your dog. Baxter was extremely happy with this so while he was chilling on his blanket we were able to tuck into a couple of delicious burgers. The portions are great and I struggled to finish mine but I still found room to manage dessert, I highly recommend trying the creme brulee!

We also discovered the nearby Highland Safaris which has a great dog friendly cafe and gift shop. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and Baxter was pleased he got to say hello to the resident black labrador Tia. They also have lots of fab walks nearby to explore with your dog and you can also try panning for gold! Baxter says he is going to try panning for gold next time he visits so he can buy a lifetime’s supply of gravy bones.

We also had a quick visit into Aberfeldy where we visited The Fountain Bar & Restaurant, Aberfeldy Pet Shop (where Baxter picked up his favourite sausage treat) and had a walk around the Birks Of Aberfeldy which is a superb walk. We were disappointed not to be able to visit Habitat Cafe on this trip as it has an excellent reputation for welcoming dogs (check out their instagram Dogs Of Habitat Cafe) so it’s on the top of our list of places we must visit next!

Saorsa Holiday cottage is the most perfect place for a Dog Friendly Perthshire holiday.
